Happy first day of spring! To celebrate I got this idea in my head that I wanted to press some flowers into wax paper to make my own covers for my books. In my head this was glorious and lovely and perfect. I imagined something like stained glass where the flowers colore popped and the wax paper was see through.
In reality it took me 3 hours to get a single good piece, the wax paper wrinkled and did not stick together, the flowers burnt bled twisted and rejected each other. I kept doing a set, it would not stick completely and I would peel it off and attach it to a new set. The cool thing about this approach though was that each time a little bit of the previous attempt stuck to the paper. I attempted to press out some of the wrinkles, and then glued the pages together.
This looks quite pretty if you hold it up to the light, in fact the effect in the light is more what I was picturing in my head when I began.
Even with all the mishaps and issues, I like what happened when I ended up putting it all together in a bound book. The wringles no longer bother me, they seem to add more texture, and with the yellow paper shining through it brightens up the paper and gets rid of some of the cloudiness.
I think I will try and dry out some flowers and attempt this again soon. Especially since right after photographing this my puppy got a hold of it and poked some holes it it and undid the binding…I think I can repair it though and chalk it up to extra character.
